Gamasutra's Top Games of the Decade

Gamasutra.com has named their top 12 games of the past decade. An interesting read. If you haven't played these games, I suggest you do (although, there are some I haven't played either).

Overall, looks like a good list to me. I am a bit sad to see Halo make the top list, though. And the fanboy in me wishes KotOR was on there. Oh well, there have been so many good games this decade that you can't possibly fit them all on a top 10 list.

They also posted an honorable mentions list. Glad to see Katamari, BioShock and Puzzle Quest all make the cut. And thrilled to see Vagrant Story on there since it's so often overlooked.

Most of my favorite games of the decade were on the honorable mentions list rather than on the top 10. But this whole thing reminded me how far behind I am with my gaming nowadays... (which happens when all of your consoles start breaking)

I've been busy traveling, visiting family, shopping, and all the normal holiday stuff, so I haven't been updating much. However, I have been able to log-in to Free Realms from time to time and collect my daily Christmas presents.

Free Realms Holiday Updates

Wow, a whole bunch of changes and improvements to Free Realms. It's definitely worth logging in and checking it out. Here's a rundown of some of the big changes:

• Houses! Members get a free house and everyone gets an apartment
• Furniture to buy for your homes
• Tons of new pets (dragons, dinosaurs, unicorns, etc.)
• New Snow Days daily wheel to spin for prizes
• Lots of new holiday items up for sale
• Snowball fighting
• Holiday decorations and events in Snowhill
• Changes to the game's interface
• New fishing game
• And more!

Impressive update. Now it's time for me to go explore and have fun!

Update: So I've had a chance to play around with some of the additions and I have to admit it's a lot of fun. You can collect a daily gift from the Christmas Tree in Snowhill, have snowball fights with your friends, seek out rare fish through the new fishing game, and more! Obviously, if you liked pets in Free Realms, you'll really like the new pets too. One of my favorite changes is the interface. I think it's going to make the game a lot more chat friendly since your chat bar now stays in position at all times instead of disappearing. I still haven't checked out the homes, but I'll be back tomorrow (at the very least, so I can gather my daily gift from under the tree).

Funcom Goes Casual

Game developer Funcom has announced that it has established SweetRobot, a subsidiary company that will focus on casual and social games.

Funcom, a Norwegian developer best known for MMORPGs Anarchy Online and Age of Conan, will continue to focus on the hardcore market while SweetRobot explores less traditional MMOs. SweetRobot's first project, Pets vs. Monsters, describes itself as a "free-to-play MMO Adventure". Pets vs. Monsters will target 8-12 year olds and promises to include some familiar RPG mechanics, exploring, and pet collecting.

Beta for Pets vs. Monsters is expected to open later this month. I skimmed over the site and it looks interesting. Might be worth keeping your eyes on if you're a kid looking for something new to play, or a parent with kids seeking an MMO.

Free Realms Dino Pets

Just came across this pic of some upcoming new pets in Free Realms. I knew they were coming out with some new pets, but I didn't know there would be a little T-Rex. How cool!
